Do the parents have the recommended GRCA clearances?

Absolutely. Kan-Can puppies come from parents who have OFA hip and elbow clearances, CERF eye clearances and SAS heart clearances. Although all breeders will tell you that this does not guarantee that the puppy will be free of any of these genetic disorders when it matures, it is a practice that reputable breeders employ to ensure that everything is being done to prevent them from occuring. This is something that buyers must demand from a breeder.

Are spay/neuter contracts required?

They are a part of the agreement between Kan-Can and the adoptive family. Any other arrangements must be made in advance.

What is the adoption fee for a puppy?

Puppies cost between $900 and $1300 depending on the breeding.

Isn't that a lot of money?

Quite simply, what makes a dog marketable is his pedigree. For these pups, that's not a lot of money at all. These puppies are from lines that have very traceable genetic background. That's the breed standard, and you should demand it as a buyer. Many breeders charge a flat fee of up to $2000 for a puppy. The fee Kan-Can requires is used not only to support the hobby of exhibiting great golden retrievers in conformation, obedience, agility and field work, but to also ensure all genetic exams have been completed and the research is thorough. We believe that if you search among reputable breeders, you'll find the fee to be competetive if not quite modest. Most importantly, when you buy a pup whose parents and grandparents are proven, you know you're getting a golden who comes from parents who have shown to the dog community to have what it takes.

I can find puppies in the classifieds that don't cost much at all. Should I consider those puppies?

We would never say from whom you should purchase a puppy. All we encourage is that you do your homework and know exactly what you're getting. The commitment of ownership of a golden one that we take very seriously, and would hope that all owners of pure-bred dogs would do the same. There's a lot of truth to the saying, "You get what your pay for."

Is it true what they say about pet stores?

To our knowledge, YES. Avoid pet stores as they often purchase from "puppy millers" who could care less about the integrity of the breed. Again, nobody will tell you who to purchase from, but there are too many examples of poor breeding for the sake of profit to be found when it comes to pet stores.

Are your puppies sold on limited or full registration?

In general, they are sold on limited. Buyers interested in full registration should discuss this with us.
